Philodendron Gloriosum is a collector favorite known for its enormous, velvety heart shaped leaves and dramatic pale veining. Its deep green foliage has a soft, almost luxurious texture, while the contrasting veins create a striking pattern that becomes even more impressive as the plant matures.

Unlike climbing Philodendrons, Gloriosum grows along the soil surface from a creeping rhizome. This makes it an especially interesting choice for plant collectors because its horizontal growth habit is completely different from the upright or climbing Philodendrons commonly found in houseplant collections.

Native to the tropical forests of Colombia and other parts of Central and South America, Philodendron Gloriosum naturally grows along the forest floor beneath the rainforest canopy. Its large leaves spread outward to capture filtered light, while its rhizome travels horizontally across the surface of the soil.

A Little Known Fact

The part of the plant you see creeping across the soil isn't a root. It's a rhizome, a horizontal underground or surface growing stem that produces both roots and new leaves. This is why Gloriosum should be planted horizontally rather than buried deeply like a traditional upright plant.

Its enormous leaves are another adaptation to life on the forest floor. Larger leaves allow the plant to capture as much filtered sunlight as possible beneath the dense rainforest canopy.

• Light: Bright indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
• Water: Water when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil begin to dry. Keep the rhizome well drained and never sitting in soggy soil.
• Growth Habit: Creeping, horizontal growth from a surface rhizome. Unlike climbing Philodendrons, it does not need a moss pole.
