We are introducing the Calathea, also known as a Prayer Plant, as another meaningful sympathy plant option.

Calatheas are known for the beautiful movement of their leaves. As light changes throughout the day, their leaves naturally open and close, creating a gentle, prayer-like movement. For a time of grief, we find that this offers a beautiful expression of prayer, peace, love, and remembrance.

If you are looking for a meaningful alternative to a Peace Lily or traditional sympathy flowers, a Calathea can carry that same thoughtful sentiment while offering something a little unexpected.

Caring for Your Sympathy Plant

Both the Peace Lily and Calathea prefer similar conditions, making either a beautiful choice for a home, office, church, or other indoor space.

Light: Both plants prefer bright to medium indirect light and do not need direct sunlight. A shaded spot near a window where they receive filtered natural light is ideal. Avoid placing either plant in harsh, direct sun.

Water: Both plants will give you clues when they need water. A Peace Lily may begin to droop, while a Calathea may curl or show signs of stress when it is becoming too dry. We recommend checking the soil about every 5 to 7 days rather than watering strictly by the calendar. A moisture meter can also help take the guesswork out of knowing when to water.

The goal is simple: pay attention to your plant and its soil. Neither plant needs direct sunlight, and both will do best with consistent care and attention.

For larger sympathy orders, such as multiple plants being delivered to a church, funeral service, re-past, memorial gathering, or other location, please call us directly. We can provide special instructions for handling, preparation, coordination, and delivery for larger orders.
