Overwatering a plant doesn't necessarily mean giving it too much water at one time. More often, it means watering too frequently and not allowing the soil to dry appropriately between waterings.

A little water here and a little water there isn't the same as thoroughly watering a plant. Depending on the plant's needs, most houseplants should be watered thoroughly, allowing water to run through the drainage holes, and then allowed to dry to the appropriate level before being watered again. For example, watering a plant on Monday, Thursday, Sunday, and then Tuesday isn't necessarily a problem because of those specific days. The problem is watering again before the soil has had enough time to dry.

This is especially important with pots larger than 4 inches. Feeling the top inch or two of soil isn't always enough to determine whether the plant actually needs water. The surface may feel dry while the soil deeper in the pot is still wet. Repeatedly watering in this situation can keep the root zone too moist over time and eventually lead to root rot. This is where a moisture meter can be particularly useful because it allows you to check moisture deeper in the pot rather than relying only on the surface.
